Thank you is not enough
Posted by Alex Carrier
We welcomed the strangers into town. Men and women bearing our wounds, carrying our hopes and fears, showing our strength.
We came together as a nation to honor their dedication, as a community to celebrate their courage and as individuals to thank them for their many sacrifices.
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we joined together to remember all those who served us and our country; the veterans, those on active duty, those here with us this Veterans Day and those with us yet far away.
Veterans Day is not about superheroes but about human beings wiling to what must be done to keep us safe. It is about men and women who go where we fear, who bear our burdens through times we cannot imagine and who keep with each breath the promise of our freedom.
We, in turn, owe them our respect, our admiration, our support, our prayers and our lives because these are the times when thank you is not enough.
We who benefit from your sacrifice will cherish and keep alive the freedom you protect. We will honor you as everyday people called to do extraordinary deeds. And we will nurture the respect and gratitude that is your due.
